UPDATE ON THE JOURNEY

In 2020, 126,579 people were living with HIV in the Midwest.
Meanwhile, 4,118 people were newly diagnosed with HIV, a 24% decrease since 2010.
The end of the HIV epidemic is indeed in sight.

But our victories haven’t affected all communities equally. Nearly half of new HIV infections in the Midwest were among Black people, and the rate of Black males living with an HIV diagnosis is 7.3 times that of white males.

As we continue our journey, we must grapple with these disparities, as well as the potential implications of success. What does “the end” mean for future generations and long-term survivors? How do we address social issues—housing, employment, safety—that affect priority communities?
